Applying for funding

Work and Income, together with Ministry of Health, administer Residential Care (elderly) and Residential Support Subsidies (younger people) to help people with health or disability related issues who need residential care. The residential care subsidy provides financial assistance for those who are assessed as needing long-term residential care in a rest home or hospital.

Ministry of Health information on residential care subsidy

The Ministry of Health is responsible for providing the residential care subsidy. Work and Income is responsible for determining whether you qualify for the subsidy by assessing your income and assets. For more information on your eligibility and funding, please click here:

What do I do next?

Moving to a new home is an important decision so it’s best not to rush it. We recommend you have a tour of the facility and talk to the Manager to ensure the facility has all the services and care you require. Many people like to bring their family along for a look around as well. Location can be important as you may wish to be close to relatives or public transport to ensure that visiting is easy.

An independent needs assessment is necessary not only to ensure eligibility for funding, should that be necessary, but also to be able to match our services to your support needs better. We can guide you with this and other applications, such as the financial assessment required for Government funding, if you wish.

Who pays for medical care and other services?

We would be happy to discuss details about the costs of care and any other information you may need about our services.

Is there financial help I can apply for?

You may be eligible for Government funding if you are 65 years or over and your income and assets are below the established threshold. A support needs assessment by an independent, approved agency and a financial assessment by Work and Income NZ are required to establish your eligibility. In some cases, people under 65 years may be eligible. We can give you relevant details if you wish or you can contact Work and Income NZ for more information.

Can I transfer from one level of care to another?

Yes, you can. An independent needs assessment by an approved agency is required to co-ordinate a change in the level of care you need. Our on-going relationship with these agencies ensures the process is an easy one.

How do I decide which living arrangement is best for me?

An independent needs assessment will establish your needs and help identify the best living option for you, which will be dependent on the level of support and daily living assistance you require. The Oceania team will help you choose a room which best meets your needs. With our focus on improving your independence, you may be able to live a more active life than before.

Is there security?

Security is very important to us. All our rooms have full smoke detector and sprinkler systems and our staff have fire safety and first aid training. We have regular security checks and staff are on hand 24 hours a day to ensure your full protection.

What help is available if needed?

A 24-hour call system will give you assistance at the touch of a button. All our care staff are well trained and we have fully qualified nursing staff available to help you. We offer 24-hour emergency medical attention.

*some services may not be available at all facilities. Please contact each facility for details.
